Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch India’s first hydrogen-powered train, a major milestone in Indian Railways’ green energy mission to promote sustainable and zero-emission transportation.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step in the country’s push toward cleaner, greener, and more sustainable railway transportation. The launch is expected to place India among a select group of nations that have adopted hydrogen fuel technology for passenger rail services.
The hydrogen-powered train is part of Indian Railways’ Green Energy Mission, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, hydrogen trains generate electricity through fuel cells, with water vapour and heat being the only by-products, making them an environmentally friendly alternative.
According to railway officials, hydrogen-powered trains are designed for non-electrified routes where electrification is either difficult or economically unviable. The technology is expected to significantly reduce noise pollution, improve fuel efficiency, and lower long-term operating costs.
India joins a growing list of countries investing in hydrogen rail technology. Germany became the first country to introduce commercial hydrogen-powered passenger trains, followed by pilot and expansion projects in countries including France, Italy, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, and South Korea. Several other nations are also exploring hydrogen-powered rail networks as part of their clean energy transition.
The launch aligns with India’s broader objective of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070 while modernising railway infrastructure through sustainable technologies. Indian Railways has already introduced electrification projects, solar-powered stations, bio-toilets, and energy-efficient systems to reduce its environmental footprint.
Officials believe hydrogen-powered trains could play a key role in transforming rail transport on routes where full electrification remains a challenge. If successful, the technology may be expanded to additional regional and heritage railway routes across the country.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen India’s position in the global hydrogen economy while promoting domestic innovation in clean transportation and renewable energy.
