PM Modi is expected to visit Canada in December as both countries advance trade ties. MEA says the exact dates remain under discussion.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December 2026, with both countries working to strengthen bilateral relations. While India’s High Commission in Ottawa announced December 11–12 as the proposed schedule, the Ministry of External Affairs subsequently said the dates remained under discussion.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified the position during a media briefing on October 16, responding to questions about the reported dates. The December visit has also been acknowledged by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office.
Trade Agreement a Key Priority
Modi and Carney spoke on October 13 and reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, at the earliest opportunity.
According to the Canadian government’s official readout, the proposed agreement would support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030. The leaders also welcomed increased engagement in finance, defence and security, artificial intelligence and people-to-people relations.
Diplomatic Engagement Gains Momentum
The conversation took place alongside a Canadian trade mission to India led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi was also highlighted as part of efforts to advance shared priorities.
Energy, agriculture and regional geopolitical challenges featured in the leaders’ discussion. Both sides also welcomed their recent security dialogue and agreed to maintain close contact ahead of Modi’s December visit.
The latest official position leaves the precise travel dates subject to further coordination. The planned visit should therefore be described as a December engagement, with December 11–12 attributed to the High Commission’s announcement.
