Navratri Day 8 guide to Maa Mahagauri puja, mantra, coconut bhog, Ashtami fasting and Kanya Pujan, with a 2026 calendar note.
The eighth form of Navdurga is Maa Mahagauri, traditionally worshipped in connection with Ashtami. Her serene image represents purity, peace and compassion. In the Delhi Shardiya Navratri 2026 calendar, Durga Ashtami and Mahagauri Puja fall on Monday, October 19.
Significance of Maa Mahagauri
Maa Mahagauri is traditionally shown wearing white, with four arms and a bull as her mount. She holds a trident and a damaru, while her other hands offer reassurance and blessings. Her symbolism invites devotees to reflect on clarity of intention and gentle conduct. The religious meaning of purity should not be confused with judgments about a person’s appearance.
Simple Puja Vidhi
Arrange fresh flowers, water, a diya and the goddess’s image on a clean altar. Offer your chosen bhog and recite her mantra, followed by aarti. Families observing Kanya Pujan on Ashtami can prepare their customary offering and welcome the invited children respectfully. Some households hold the ceremony on Navami instead.
Maa Mahagauri Mantra
ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः॥
Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah.
Meaning: Salutations to Goddess Mahagauri. Chant attentively according to your family’s practice; a particular repetition count is not compulsory for this simple guide.
Traditional Bhog
Coconut is a traditional offering associated with Maa Mahagauri. Many North Indian families also prepare halwa, puri and kala chana for Kanya Pujan. This ceremonial prasad may contain wheat, semolina and pulses, so it is different from food permitted during a continuing grain-free vrat. Follow your family’s practice for when to eat it and conclude the fast.
Fasting and Meal Ideas
If you are still fasting, choose ingredients accepted in your household, such as fruit, curd, kuttu or samak. Do not assume that the Kanya Pujan menu is suitable for every stage of the fast. Confirm the appropriate parana, or fast-breaking, time with your local panchang or religious adviser.
Calendar and Closing Rituals
Day 8 here refers to Mahagauri’s place in the nine-goddess sequence. In 2026, an extra Saptami sunrise means Ashtami does not simply fall eight consecutive dates after the festival begins. Local tithi and ritual rules should guide scheduling, especially for Sandhi Puja and Kanya Pujan.
