Piyush Goyal has urged American manufacturers to expand in India, partner with Indian SMEs and co-invest in advanced manufacturing and resilient supply chains.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has urged American manufacturers to expand their presence in India, partner with Indian small and medium-sized enterprises and invest jointly in advanced manufacturing.
Goyal made the appeal while addressing a business roundtable convened by the National Association of Manufacturers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The meeting brought together representatives of large and small manufacturing companies from across the United States.
Goyal Highlights India’s Manufacturing Potential
The commerce minister highlighted India’s growing industrial base, skilled workforce, expanding infrastructure and large domestic market as important advantages for global manufacturers.
He invited American companies to explore opportunities to deepen their operations in India, collaborate with local SMEs and co-invest in advanced manufacturing projects.
“Invited American manufacturers to explore opportunities to deepen their presence in India, partner with Indian SMEs, and co-invest in advanced manufacturing to build resilient supply chains that create value for both economies,” Goyal said in a social-media post following the meeting.
The proposed partnerships could give American companies access to Indian manufacturing capabilities while helping domestic SMEs obtain technology, capital and entry into international supply chains.
Focus on Resilient Supply Chains
Supply-chain diversification has become a significant issue for governments and businesses following disruptions caused by the pandemic, geopolitical conflicts and trade restrictions.
India is positioning itself as an alternative manufacturing and export base in sectors including electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, machinery, defence equipment and digital infrastructure.
Goyal said closer collaboration between Indian and American businesses could generate employment, strengthen industrial capabilities and create value for both economies.
G20 Meeting and India-US Trade Talks
The engagement formed part of Goyal’s visit to the United States from September 29 to October 5.
He is scheduled to participate in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1 at the invitation of the US Trade Representative. The minister will also hold meetings with American investors, startup founders and executives from the manufacturing, consumer-goods, agribusiness, retail and technology sectors.
Goyal is expected to hold bilateral discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer as India and the United States attempt to advance negotiations on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement.
Both governments are also working towards an interim agreement based on their joint statement of February 7, 2026. However, outstanding issues remain, and neither country has announced that a final agreement has been reached.
The minister’s US visit will also include engagements in Chicago and New York aimed at attracting investment and strengthening commercial ties between Indian and American companies.
