Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign after the country won 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze in Glasgow.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the Indian contingent for its impressive performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, congratulating athletes who brought home a total of 39 medals. India finished the Games in fourth position, winning 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals.
In a message issued after the Games, PM Modi expressed pride in the contingent’s performance and highlighted the athletes’ skill, determination and dedication. He said their hard work would continue to inspire India’s youngsters and wished the entire team success in future competitions.
Mirabai Chanu Leads India’s Gold Rush
One of India’s biggest highlights came from Mirabai Chanu, who created Commonwealth Games history by winning her third consecutive gold medal in women’s 48kg weightlifting. She had previously won gold at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. Glasgow 2026 therefore marked her third successive Commonwealth title.
Other notable gold-medal performances came from India’s boxing contingent. Preeti Pawar won gold in the women’s 54kg boxing event after defeating Canada’s Scarlett Delgado by unanimous decision. Her victory also gave India its first boxing gold of the Glasgow Games.
Jaismine Lamboria added another boxing gold, winning the women’s 57kg category, while Arundhati Choudhary captured gold in the women’s 70kg boxing event. Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal were also among India’s boxing gold medallists.
India’s success extended beyond boxing and weightlifting. Sharmila Dhankar won gold in women’s F57 shot put, while Dilip Gavit claimed gold in the men’s T47 100m para-athletics event. Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh also secured gold medals in judo.
Neeraj Chopra and Sreeshankar Win Athletics Silvers
India’s athletics campaign also produced major moments.
Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in men’s javelin throw. His return to the Commonwealth stage following an injury-disrupted period made the medal particularly significant.
Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar also secured silver in the men’s long jump, producing a best effort of 8.09 metres. He became India’s first athlete to win two Commonwealth Games medals in the event, having also taken silver at Birmingham 2022.
Other Indian silver medallists included Praveen Chithravel in men’s triple jump, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam and Raja Muthupandi in weightlifting, and several athletes across para-athletics and other disciplines.
India Finishes Fourth With 39 Medals
India’s final haul of 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze — placed the country fourth on the final medal table. The Games featured a reduced sports programme compared with Birmingham 2022, making direct comparisons with previous editions difficult.
The Commonwealth Games Federation also formally passed the baton to Ahmedabad, which is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, giving India an additional reason to celebrate its Glasgow campaign.
PM Modi’s message comes as Indian sport looks ahead to the next major international competitions, with the performances of athletes such as Mirabai Chanu, Neeraj Chopra, Murali Sreeshankar and India’s emerging boxing stars providing momentum for the country’s future sporting ambitions.
