A Supreme Court contempt plea alleges Delhi Metro closures and railway restrictions violated October 9 directions ahead of the CJP protest.
New Delhi: A contempt petition has been filed in the Supreme Court alleging that authorities violated its October 9 directions by continuing blanket restrictions on Delhi Metro and railway services ahead of the planned CJP protest.
According to PTI, advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi filed the plea through advocate Chand Qureshi. It names Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation chairperson D Thara as respondents.
What the Supreme Court Directed
During Friday’s hearing, the court distinguished between regulating public transport and completely prohibiting its operation. It recorded the Solicitor General’s assurance that authorities would reassess the restrictions and permit regulated services while following the principle of proportionality.
The court also called for transport arrangements to be widely publicised to minimise inconvenience to residents and commuters. Its directions allowed appropriate security regulation rather than requiring unrestricted movement.
What the Petition Alleges
The petitioner claims that station-gate closures and train cancellations continued despite those directions. He said he visited GTB Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations around 9.30 pm on Friday and found entry gates closed, while exits were being manually regulated.
The plea seeks contempt proceedings, removal of blanket transport prohibitions and a publicly announced schedule of regulated operations. These are the petitioner’s allegations; the cited report does not record a Supreme Court finding of contempt.
Protest Behind the Restrictions
The Cockroach Janta Party and student organisations called the demonstration over alleged electoral-roll irregularities, demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Heavy security deployment and detentions were reported around the planned gathering in central Delhi on Saturday.
