Protect teeth with twice-daily fluoride brushing, daily interdental cleaning and fewer sugary snacks while avoiding abrasive DIY whitening remedies.
Healthy teeth do not require harsh home-whitening mixtures. The most effective routine focuses on removing plaque, strengthening enamel with fluoride and reducing frequent exposure to sugar.
Brush twice daily for two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the bristles gently towards the gumline and clean the outer, inner and chewing surfaces without aggressive scrubbing. Replace the brush or brush head when the bristles become worn.
Clean between the teeth once daily using floss, an interdental brush or another dentist-recommended cleaner. Toothbrush bristles cannot effectively reach every tight contact area, where plaque can contribute to cavities and gum inflammation.
Limit how frequently you consume sugary foods and drinks, particularly between meals. Water is the best routine drink for most people. Regular dental examinations remain important even when there is no pain.
Precautions
Avoid rubbing teeth with lemon, vinegar or other acidic foods. Acid can soften enamel, making it more vulnerable to wear. Salt and charcoal mixtures may be abrasive and can expose the naturally yellower dentine beneath the enamel. Oil pulling is not a substitute for brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth.
See a dentist for persistent bleeding gums, tooth pain, swelling, loose teeth, mouth sores, sensitivity or bad breath that does not improve with normal hygiene.
