Three young people were killed and one critically injured after a speeding BMW crashed through a barrier on Mumbai’s Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty.
Three young people were killed and another critically injured after a BMW crashed on Mumbai’s Coastal Road early on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
The accident occurred near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College, at approximately 5:20 a.m. The luxury car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when its driver allegedly lost control near a bridge.
According to preliminary police information, the car struck the road’s outer barrier before falling into a parking-construction area below. The impact severely damaged the vehicle, crushing its front section and roof.
Three Occupants Declared Dead
Emergency teams took all four occupants to the civic-run Nair Hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead. The surviving passenger was admitted to the trauma ward in critical condition.
The deceased were identified in multiple reports as Shanay Gajjal, 21, Aditya Jakasniya, 19, and Dhairya Seth, 17. The injured passenger was identified as Aditya Oswal.
The occupants were reportedly students from a college in Mumbai’s Vile Parle area and originally came from Gujarat. They were returning after visiting Marine Drive when the accident occurred.
Police Examine Speed and Possible Alcohol Use
Police have opened an investigation to establish the precise cause of the crash. Initial findings suggest that excessive speed may have caused the driver to lose control, but the conclusion remains subject to the formal inquiry.
Investigators are expected to examine CCTV footage, the vehicle’s condition and forensic evidence. Authorities are also checking whether alcohol or any other substance contributed to the accident.
No separate vehicle or pedestrians were reported to have been involved.
Coastal Road Safety Concerns Return
The fatal crash has renewed concerns about speeding on the 10.58-kilometre Mumbai Coastal Road, which connects Marine Drive with the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link.
Residents have previously complained about luxury cars and sports vehicles allegedly being driven at excessive speeds on the road during late-night and early-morning hours. Traffic authorities have used speed-monitoring equipment to identify violations, but the latest accident is likely to trigger fresh scrutiny of enforcement and protective barriers.
Police said statements from witnesses and the victims’ acquaintances were being recorded as the investigation continued.
