New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of major initiatives focused on youth, education, technology, sports, civil defence, semiconductors and energy security in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Saturday. The announcements are part of the government’s broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Here are six key announcements from PM Modi’s 80th Independence Day speech:
1. AI Training for 1 Crore Youth
PM Modi announced a major artificial intelligence skilling programme under which one crore (10 million) young Indians will receive AI training within one year. The initiative aims to equip the country’s youth with skills needed for an increasingly technology-driven economy and expand employment opportunities in emerging sectors.
2. Free Online Coaching for Competitive Exams
The Prime Minister also announced a free online coaching network for competitive examinations. The initiative is aimed particularly at reducing the financial burden on poor and middle-class families, many of whom spend heavily on private coaching.
The government is expected to provide further details about the platform, courses, examinations covered and registration process.
3. Nationwide Sports Talent Hunt
PM Modi announced a nationwide sports talent hunt for children aged five to 15 years. The programme will identify promising athletes in villages, cities and schools and provide selected youngsters with specialised training.
The announcement comes as India prepares for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and continues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.
4. New Civil Defence Network
The government will create a modern and vibrant civil defence network to respond to emerging national security and emergency challenges. The initiative is intended to strengthen preparedness and public resilience.
5. 100 GW Nuclear Power Target
PM Modi set an ambitious target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. He also announced plans for five new nuclear reactors during this decade, underlining the government’s focus on long-term energy security and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
6. Major Semiconductor Expansion
India will further expand its semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, with PM Modi highlighting plans for additional semiconductor plants. The move is aimed at strengthening domestic chip production and supporting India’s broader technology and self-reliance goals.
Together, the announcements reflect the government’s focus on skills, technology, education, sports, energy security and strategic manufacturing as India works towards the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.
