A new study is adding to the growing evidence that plant-based diets do not necessarily compromise athletic performance. Research involving recreational runners and resistance-training participants found no significant difference in key performance measures when participants followed plant-based and omnivorous diets.
The randomized crossover study included recreational athletes from four universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. Participants followed both dietary patterns, allowing researchers to compare their performance under different eating approaches. The study focused on measures including running performance and strength.
Researchers found that the difference between the two diets was not statistically significant for either the 12-minute timed run or composite machine-strength testing. The findings suggest that recreational athletes can potentially adopt a plant-based eating pattern without experiencing a meaningful decline in performance.
Performance Depends on Overall Nutrition
The latest findings do not mean that simply eliminating animal products automatically improves fitness or athletic performance. Instead, the research highlights the importance of overall diet quality, adequate energy intake and sufficient protein.
Athletes following plant-based diets can obtain protein from foods such as soy, beans, lentils, peas, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Combining a variety of protein sources throughout the day can help provide essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and recovery.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis similarly found that plant-based diets did not compromise strength or power performance, while overall athletic performance remained broadly unchanged. For people who exercise regularly, protein intake remains a key consideration. Plant-based diets can provide adequate protein, but athletes may need to pay closer attention to food choices and total intake.
