Google Gemini has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for Google’s AI strategy and intensifying competition in the global artificial intelligence market.
New Delhi: Google’s Gemini AI assistant has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone in the company’s artificial intelligence push. Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement, describing Gemini as one of the company’s fastest-growing products.
The milestone comes as competition in the generative AI industry continues to intensify. Google is competing with OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI developers to establish their platforms as everyday digital assistants for consumers, businesses and developers.
Rapid Growth for Gemini
Gemini’s growth has accelerated significantly over the past year. At Google I/O in May 2025, the Gemini app had around 400 million monthly active users. By May 2026, that figure had risen above 900 million, while Google’s second-quarter earnings update reported approximately 950 million monthly active users.
Crossing the one-billion mark shortly afterward makes Gemini one of the world’s largest consumer AI platforms.
Google’s milestone refers to usage of the Gemini app, rather than simply counting people who encounter AI features elsewhere across Google products. This distinction is important because Google separately reports large user numbers for AI-powered Search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.
AI Moves Beyond Text-Based Chat
Gemini’s expansion has increasingly focused on multimodal and agentic AI. Users can interact with the system through text, voice, images and other forms of input, while Google’s newer agentic features are designed to help users complete tasks rather than simply answer questions.
Google announced at I/O 2026 that Gemini was becoming more proactive, including features such as Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, reflecting the company’s broader strategy to transform AI assistants into systems capable of taking action on behalf of users.
Google has also been expanding Gemini’s capabilities in India. The company launched Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app for Indian users, allowing the assistant, with user permission, to connect information across services such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search.
Competition With OpenAI Intensifies
Gemini’s billion-user milestone comes at an important point in the global AI race. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also reached the billion-user scale, making the competition between the two companies increasingly focused on user retention, AI capabilities, agentic features and monetisation.
Google has a major distribution advantage through its enormous ecosystem of Android, Search, Chrome, YouTube and other services. Integrating AI into products already used by billions of people gives Gemini significant opportunities to attract new users and increase engagement.
The next challenge for Google will be converting this enormous user base into sustained daily usage and profitable AI services while continuing to improve reliability, privacy and safety.
The one-billion-user milestone nevertheless represents a major turning point for consumer artificial intelligence and demonstrates how quickly AI assistants are becoming part of mainstream digital life.
