The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved naming Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport. Final central approval may still be required.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Noida International Airport in Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Friday, October 9.
The decision was taken to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s completion of 25 years as the head of an elected government and recognise what the state administration described as his contribution to Uttar Pradesh’s development.
However, the Cabinet decision is a proposal from the state government. Airport naming and renaming proposals generally require approval from the Union government before the new name is formally notified and implemented.
Yogi Cabinet Passes Naming Proposal
Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Adityanath said the Council of Ministers had expressed its gratitude to the Prime Minister for the development of the airport at Jewar.
“The Cabinet has approved a proposal to name it Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar,” the Chief Minister said.
The Cabinet also adopted a resolution congratulating Modi on completing 25 years in public office as the head of government. Modi became Gujarat’s chief minister on October 7, 2001, before assuming office as India’s prime minister in May 2014.
Adityanath described the period as a journey guided by “service, dedication and Nation First,” connecting Modi’s leadership with infrastructure, welfare and cultural-development projects in Uttar Pradesh.
Is the Airport’s New Name Final?
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet’s approval initiates the formal renaming process, but the name does not necessarily change immediately.
In India, a state government normally recommends the proposed name of an airport to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. After consultation with other central ministries and agencies, the Union Cabinet may grant final approval. The change is subsequently notified and reflected in official signage, operational records and public communications.
At the time of reporting, the airport’s official website continued to identify the facility as Noida International Airport.
Noida International Airport Begins Operations
Located at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport serves the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.
Commercial operations commenced on June 15, 2026, with IndiGo becoming the first airline to operate from the facility.
The airport is being developed through a public-private partnership by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. The Uttar Pradesh government signed the concession agreement for the project in October 2020.
Its first phase is designed to accommodate approximately 12 million passengers annually. Future expansion could increase the airport’s capacity substantially and strengthen passenger, cargo and industrial connectivity across the region.
Yogi Highlights Uttar Pradesh Development Projects
During the press conference, Adityanath also highlighted national highways, expressways, metro networks, the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor and dedicated freight corridors.
He cited welfare initiatives covering farmers, housing, tap-water connections, healthcare, LPG distribution, financial inclusion and women’s self-help groups. The figures presented by the Chief Minister were part of the state government’s assessment of programmes implemented under the Centre and Uttar Pradesh’s “double-engine” administration.
Adityanath said his government would continue working towards the goals of “Viksit Uttar Pradesh” and “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
