Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, the review examined research on the relationship between exercise, brain reward pathways and dietary behaviour. Researchers distinguish between “liking” food—the pleasure experienced while eating—and “wanting” it, which reflects the motivation or craving to obtain a particular food.
Evidence reviewed by the researchers suggests a single bout of exercise can temporarily alter the reward value of energy-dense foods. However, the effect varies depending on factors including exercise intensity, type of activity, timing, whether someone has recently eaten and body composition.
Regular Workouts May Support Healthier Choices
The potentially more important finding involves consistent physical activity. The review suggests long-term exercise may produce adaptations in eating behaviour, potentially shifting preferences toward healthier dietary choices and improving appetite regulation.
Earlier research supports this possibility. Habitual moderate-to-vigorous physical activity has been associated with lower liking and wanting for high-fat foods and greater preference for lower-fat options. Exercise training has also been linked with improvements in overall appetite control.
