Build an effective acne routine with gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic products and proven ingredients while avoiding irritating DIY treatments.
Acne is not caused by dirty skin, and aggressive washing will not clear it faster. A consistent, gentle routine combined with proven active ingredients usually works better than toothpaste, lemon juice or harsh scrubs.
Wash the face up to twice daily and after heavy sweating with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Choose moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup labelled “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores.” Avoid squeezing spots because picking increases inflammation, infection risk and scarring.
Evidence-supported non-prescription ingredients include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and adapalene. Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce acne-causing bacteria, while salicylic acid and adapalene help unclog pores. Start with one product at a lower strength or use it less frequently to limit dryness and irritation.
Apply acne treatment to the entire acne-prone area rather than only visible spots. Improvement normally takes several weeks, so switching products every few days can make irritation worse and prevent an effective routine from working.
Precautions
Use moisturiser and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen because some acne treatments increase dryness or sun sensitivity. Pregnant people and those planning pregnancy should seek medical advice before using retinoids such as adapalene.
Consult a dermatologist for deep, painful acne, nodules, scarring, persistent breakouts or acne that affects confidence and mental health. Prescription treatment may prevent permanent scars.
