Build a dermatologist-informed skin-care routine with gentle cleansing, moisturiser and SPF 30+ sunscreen while avoiding damaging DIY treatments.
Healthy skin usually benefits more from a consistent basic routine than from complicated product combinations. Dermatologists generally recommend gentle cleansing, moisturising and daily sun protection as the foundation of skin care.
Wash the face with lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Scrubbing, harsh soap and very hot water can damage the skin barrier and worsen dryness or sensitivity. People with oily skin can choose a gentle foaming cleanser, while dry or sensitive skin may respond better to a fragrance-free creamy product.
Apply moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Look for “non-comedogenic” products if you are prone to clogged pores. During the day, use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin. Reapply during prolonged outdoor activity, swimming or heavy sweating.
Introduce only one new active product at a time and patch-test it first. This makes it easier to identify the cause of irritation.
Precautions
Avoid applying undiluted lemon juice, vinegar, toothpaste, bleach, baking soda or harsh sugar scrubs to the face. “Natural” does not automatically mean gentle, and these ingredients may cause irritation, burns or increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Stop using a product that causes persistent burning, swelling, blistering or an itchy rash. Consult a dermatologist for changing moles, non-healing sores, severe eczema, persistent pigmentation or symptoms that do not improve with gentle care.
