Chamoli, Uttarakhand: The inaugural edition of the Niti Extreme Ultra Run 2026 commenced with great enthusiasm in the picturesque and strategically important Niti Valley of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Organized by the Tourism Department in collaboration with the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the three-day adventure and fitness event has drawn 933 participants from 28 states across India.
The event aims to promote border tourism, showcase the rich cultural heritage of Uttarakhand’s frontier villages, and encourage fitness under the national Fit India Movement.
Uttarakhand Government Promotes Border Tourism Through Sports
The ultra-run was officially flagged off by Cabinet Minister and District In-Charge Minister Bharat Singh Chaudhary, who highlighted the state government’s commitment to the development of border regions and tourism promotion.
Speaking at the event, the minister said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the initiative has become a powerful platform to take Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India campaign to India’s remote frontier regions.
He emphasized that expanding tourism activities in border villages would create employment opportunities for local residents while strengthening the country’s “second line of defense” through vibrant and economically active communities.

Cultural Evening Showcases Local Heritage
Ahead of the marathon, the Tourism Department organized a cultural evening in Malari village on Saturday night to celebrate the region’s rich traditions and folk culture.
Renowned folk singer Kishan Mahipal enthralled participants and locals with his popular Garhwali folk performances. Athletes, tourists, and villagers joined the celebrations, creating a vibrant atmosphere ahead of the competition.
Adventure Tourism Gains Momentum in Uttarakhand
The Niti Extreme Ultra Run is part of Uttarakhand’s broader strategy to position its border regions as premier destinations for adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and endurance sports.
Officials believe such events will help attract more visitors to lesser-known Himalayan destinations while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The combination of high-altitude running, mountain biking, cultural experiences, and spectacular Himalayan scenery is expected to make the Niti Extreme Ultra Run one of India’s most unique adventure sports events.
Several senior government officials, Indian Army and ITBP personnel, public representatives, and local residents were present during the inaugural ceremony, underscoring the significance of the event for the region’s tourism and development prospects.
