With only two matches remaining in IPL 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a fresh anti-corruption regulation by banning smart sunglasses inside the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).
The decision comes after the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU) raised concerns over the advanced communication features available in modern smart glasses, including live streaming, audio-video calling, text messaging and internet connectivity.
According to the BCCI advisory sent to IPL franchises, smart sunglasses are now classified as both a “Communication Device” and an “Audio/Video Recording Device” under the PMOA Minimum Standards.
Why Has BCCI Banned Smart Glasses in IPL?
The BCCI stated that several companies are actively marketing smart eyewear to players and support staff, prompting fears over possible misuse inside restricted match areas.
The Board warned that such devices can connect through Wi-Fi or mobile data networks, potentially compromising anti-corruption and security protocols during matches.
“It is hereby notified that the possession and/or use of smart goggles is strictly prohibited within the Players and Match Officials Area,” the advisory stated.
Players and Support Staff Must Deposit Devices Before Entering PMOA
Under the new rule, all players, support staff and match officials are required to deposit smart glasses along with mobile phones and smartwatches before entering designated PMOA zones on match days.
The devices must be handed over to the Security Liaison Officer (SLO).
The BCCI has also warned that failure to comply with the rule could attract disciplinary action and penalties under IPL 2026 PMOA regulations.
IPL 2026 Sees Multiple Code of Conduct Violations
The latest restriction comes amid growing concerns over discipline and security breaches during IPL 2026.
Recently, Rajasthan Royals staff member Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh and issued a warning after being seen using a mobile phone in the team dugout during a match.
Following several incidents this season, the BCCI had already introduced stricter security measures, including:
- Restrictions on late-night outings for players without security approval
- Ban on guests in players’ hotel rooms
- Enhanced monitoring of team movement and communication devices
- Stronger anti-corruption surveillance protocols
BCCI Tightens Security Amid Honey-Trap and Data Leak Concerns
Sources indicate that the Board is taking extra precautions due to fears of information leaks, unauthorised recordings and potential honey-trap risks involving players and support staff.
The ACSU has been actively monitoring compliance as the tournament enters its final stage.
With IPL 2026 nearing its conclusion, the BCCI’s latest crackdown highlights the increasing role of technology-related security threats in modern cricket tournaments.
