AMSTELVEEN: The Indian women’s hockey team has capped an impressive FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a memorable 3-1 victory over world No. 5 Germany, securing fifth place and recording India’s best finish at the tournament in 52 years.
The fifth-place result is India’s second-best Women’s Hockey World Cup finish ever, behind only the fourth-place finish achieved at the inaugural tournament in 1974. India entered the classification encounter having lost just once during this World Cup campaign.
Navneet Kaur Scores Twice Against Germany
The fifth-sixth place classification match at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, remained goalless throughout the first half. Germany enjoyed spells of greater possession and created penalty-corner opportunities, but India’s defence prevented the two-time world champions from taking advantage.
India dramatically changed the contest after half-time.
Ishika Chaudhary opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, producing a reverse-lift finish after breaking into the German circle. Just a minute later, India earned their first penalty corner and Navneet Kaur converted it in the 44th minute, quickly establishing a 2-0 advantage.
Navneet struck again shortly after the final quarter began, scoring a field goal in the 47th minute to put India 3-0 ahead and effectively take control of the match.
Germany Pull One Back Late
Germany continued pushing for a comeback but India’s defensive unit remained composed.
Lynn Krings finally scored for Germany in the 59th minute, converting a rebound to reduce the deficit to 3-1. There was too little time left, however, for Germany to seriously threaten India’s lead.
India held on to complete one of the standout victories of their World Cup campaign.
Neha Goyal Named Player of the Match
Midfielder Neha Goyal was named Player of the Match following India’s victory. Speaking afterwards, she said the team’s World Cup performance would provide confidence ahead of the Asian Games, while acknowledging that Asian rivals including China, Japan and Korea would present another difficult challenge.
India’s goalkeepers and defence also played an important role. Germany generated pressure during the match, but India repeatedly resisted, allowing the attacking unit to capitalise during its explosive second-half spell.
India End World Cup With Only One Defeat
India entered the tournament ranked ninth in the world and exceeded expectations during the competition. Their only defeat came against the Netherlands, while several performances against higher-ranked opponents demonstrated the team’s progress at international level.
Official FIH tournament statistics show India finished with eight goals scored and five conceded. Navneet Kaur and Deepika finished as India’s joint-leading scorers with two goals apiece.
The victory over Germany was particularly significant because India had gone more than 230 minutes without scoring before Ishika broke the drought. Three Indian goals then arrived in approximately four minutes of playing time across the third and fourth quarters.
Best World Cup Result Since 1974
India’s fifth-place finish represents their strongest performance at the Women’s Hockey World Cup since 1974, when the team reached the semifinals and eventually finished fourth.
That makes the 2026 result India’s best World Cup finish in 52 years and only the second time the women’s team has finished inside the top five at the global tournament.
Attention now shifts toward the Asian Games, where India will attempt to carry the confidence generated by its strong World Cup campaign into another major international competition.
