Romanian Authorities Call Incident a ‘Serious and Irresponsible Escalation’
NATO and European leaders strongly condemned Russia after a Russian drone crashed into a residential apartment building in Romania, injuring two civilians and escalating fears about the Ukraine war spilling into NATO territory.
The incident took place overnight in the eastern Romanian city of Galati, close to the Ukraine border, during a large-scale Russian drone attack targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. Romanian authorities described the event as the most serious cross-border drone incident since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Drone Crash Injures Woman and Teenager in Romania
According to Romanian emergency officials, the drone struck the roof of a 10-storey apartment building, triggering a fire and forcing the evacuation of nearly 70 residents. A 53-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were injured in the explosion and taken to hospital for treatment.
Romania’s Defence Ministry said the drone entered Romanian airspace while Russia was conducting overnight strikes on neighbouring Ukraine. Radar systems tracked the drone before it crashed into the residential building in Galati.
NATO Says Alliance Ready to Defend ‘Every Inch’ of Territory
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned the incident and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to protecting member nations.
“Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all,” Rutte said while stressing that NATO remains ready to defend every inch of alliance territory.
Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has experienced multiple drone incursions since the war began, but this marks the first time civilians inside the country have reportedly been injured by a Russian drone strike.
Romania Scrambles Fighter Jets, Seeks More Anti-Drone Support
Romanian authorities scrambled F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter after detecting aerial threats near the border. However, officials reportedly decided against intercepting the drone due to fears of debris falling into populated urban areas.
Following the incident, Romania requested faster deployment of NATO anti-drone defence systems and announced diplomatic measures against Russia, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanta and the expulsion of a Russian diplomat.
Growing Concerns Over Ukraine War Spilling Into NATO Territory
The drone strike has intensified international concern over the risk of the Russia-Ukraine conflict expanding into neighbouring NATO countries.
European Union leaders and NATO officials described the airspace violation as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability.
Security analysts warn that repeated drone incursions into NATO member states such as Romania, Poland and the Baltic region could further raise tensions between Russia and the Western military alliance.
