Mumbai: Actor Mrunal Thakur has sparked fresh conversations about the increasingly popular DINK (Double Income, No Kids) lifestyle after sharing her views on parenthood during a recent podcast appearance.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by Ranveer Allahabadia, Mrunal was asked whether she plans to have children in the future. The actor responded, “Of course, everyone wants them.” However, Allahabadia pointed out that not everyone shares the same aspiration and introduced the concept of the DINK lifestyle, where couples choose to remain child-free while focusing on their careers, finances, and personal goals.
Seemingly unfamiliar with the term, Mrunal reaffirmed her desire to become a parent, stating, “I want kids… I will have them when the time is right.”
What Is the DINK Lifestyle?
Mental health experts say the rise of the DINK lifestyle reflects changing social attitudes toward marriage, family planning, and personal fulfillment.
According to Gautami Devi Chetri, a clinical psychologist at Lissun, more individuals and couples are embracing the freedom to make life choices based on personal preferences rather than societal expectations.
She explained that evolving cultural norms have made the decision to remain child-free more socially acceptable. Many couples are prioritizing professional growth, financial independence, travel, and self-development over traditional family structures.
Experts note that without the responsibilities of raising children, DINK couples often have more time and resources to invest in their careers, hobbies, and personal aspirations.
Emotional Readiness Matters More Than Social Pressure
Rutuja Walawalkar, psychologist at Mpower, Aditya Birla Education Trust, emphasized that discussions around parenthood often focus on age, financial stability, and career security, while overlooking emotional preparedness.
She highlighted that parenting requires emotional maturity, adaptability, and a willingness to grow alongside a child. According to Walawalkar, many individuals face societal pressure to have children soon after marriage, which can influence major life decisions.
Experts warn that entering parenthood primarily due to external expectations may lead to stress, conflict, and dissatisfaction. In contrast, couples who make a conscious and well-considered decision about having children often experience a healthier and more fulfilling transition into parenthood.
Parenthood vs. Child-Free Living: A Personal Choice
As conversations around family planning evolve, the DINK lifestyle continues to gain visibility, especially among younger generations seeking greater autonomy over their personal and professional lives. At the same time, many individuals, like Mrunal Thakur, continue to view parenthood as an important life goal, choosing to pursue it when they feel emotionally and personally ready.
