A newly surfaced employee-shared compensation spreadsheet is offering a rare glimpse into how much Microsoft workers are earning across its AI, cloud, Azure and security businesses, as competition for specialized artificial-intelligence talent intensifies across Silicon Valley.
The spreadsheet contains compensation information voluntarily submitted by nearly 600 Microsoft employees in the United States. It includes base salaries, annual raises, cash bonuses and stock awards. Because the information is anonymous and self-reported, it is not an official or comprehensive Microsoft salary database.
Cloud + AI Stock Awards Reach $1.4 Million
The most striking figures come from Microsoft’s Cloud + AI organization. According to the employee-reported data, base salaries in the division ranged from approximately $111,000 to $450,000, while cash bonuses ranged as high as $300,000.
Equity compensation can be substantially larger. Reported stock awards for Cloud + AI employees ranged from about $9,000 to as much as $1.4 million, demonstrating how stock can represent a major portion of compensation for senior and highly sought-after employees.
Microsoft’s dedicated AI organization showed reported base salaries ranging from approximately $134,000 to $232,000, cash bonuses reaching $78,000 and stock awards of up to $140,000. Azure employees reported base salaries between roughly $123,000 and $252,000, with stock awards reaching $294,000.
AI Talent War Intensifies
The figures highlight the increasingly expensive battle for engineers, researchers and other specialists capable of developing advanced AI systems.
Microsoft is competing for talent with major technology and AI companies as enormous investments flow into models, chips and data-center infrastructure. Equity awards have consequently become an important tool for attracting and retaining valuable employees.
The spreadsheet also offers an unusual glimpse into employees’ AI usage. Around 350 workers reported their AI-related usage costs, with a median of approximately $300 over a 28-day period. Individual reports ranged from only a few dollars to as much as $28,000, although the figures are voluntary and may contain errors.
The compensation data should therefore be viewed as a snapshot rather than Microsoft’s official pay scale. Nevertheless, the reported million-dollar equity packages underline just how valuable top AI and cloud expertise has become as the world’s largest technology companies compete to lead the next phase of artificial intelligence.
