Meta Platforms has announced a major strategic move in India, investing $900 million in fintech startup CRED while appointing the company’s founder, Kunal Shah, as the new global head of WhatsApp.
The investment values Bengaluru-based CRED at $4.5 billion, marking one of the largest funding deals in India’s fintech sector in recent years. The valuation exceeds CRED’s 2025 funding round valuation of $3.5 billion but remains below its 2022 peak valuation of $6.4 billion.
Kunal Shah to Lead WhatsApp Worldwide
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Kunal Shah will take over as the global head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging platform for seven years. Cathcart will transition into a new leadership role within Meta.
Shah, one of India’s most prominent startup founders, also confirmed the appointment, signaling a significant milestone for Indian entrepreneurship on the global technology stage.
Meta Strengthens India Focus
India remains WhatsApp’s largest market, with more than 500 million users. Meta has increasingly expanded the platform’s offerings in the country beyond messaging, including digital payments, business solutions, and commerce services.
The investment in CRED further strengthens Meta’s presence in India’s rapidly growing digital and financial services ecosystem.
CRED to Accelerate Growth Plans
CRED stated that Meta’s investment will provide fresh capital to accelerate expansion, strengthen leadership capabilities, and broaden its product portfolio across multiple financial categories.
The company clarified that Meta will acquire only a minority stake and will not gain access to customer data.
Founded in 2018, CRED operates a members-only platform for individuals with strong credit profiles. Its services include credit card payments, lending, insurance, wealth management, and lifestyle benefits.
According to the company, CRED serves around 17 million monthly members, facilitates over 40% of India’s credit card bill payments, and manages lending assets exceeding ₹240 billion for partner financial institutions.
Leadership Transition at CRED
Following Shah’s move to Meta, Miten Sampat, who has overseen strategy and finance at CRED since 2020, has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer.
The company said it remains focused on expanding its financial services offerings and strengthening its position in India’s digital finance market.
Meta’s Growing Investment Footprint in India
The CRED deal adds to Meta’s growing list of investments in India, including its high-profile stake in Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance Industries.
The latest investment underscores Meta’s long-term commitment to India’s technology and digital economy, while also highlighting the country’s increasing influence in shaping global technology leadership.
