Larsen & Toubro has secured an AI infrastructure order worth up to ₹15,000 crore from Together AI to build a large-scale NVIDIA-powered facility in Chennai.
New Delhi: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major order worth up to ₹15,000 crore ($1.57 billion) from US-based AI cloud company Together AI, marking a significant expansion of India’s high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The project will involve building a large-scale AI facility powered by NVIDIA high-performance computing technology.
The contract is being described as one of the most significant AI infrastructure projects announced in India and strengthens L&T’s growing presence in the country’s rapidly expanding data-centre sector.
According to reports, the order falls within L&T’s ₹10,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore mega-order category. The project will be executed at L&T’s data-centre campus in Chennai and is expected to deploy approximately 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs, creating what L&T describes as India’s largest single-cluster AI infrastructure facility.
Together AI to Use Advanced Computing Infrastructure
Together AI is an AI cloud platform that provides computing infrastructure for AI developers and enterprises. The Chennai facility is expected to support demanding workloads such as AI model training, fine-tuning and inference.
The large GPU deployment highlights the rapidly increasing computing requirements of generative AI. As businesses move from experimenting with AI tools to deploying models at scale, demand for high-density data centres and accelerated computing infrastructure has increased significantly.
The L&T project therefore represents more than a conventional data-centre development. It reflects the growing importance of AI factories, where large clusters of GPUs operate continuously to provide computing capacity for AI companies and enterprise customers.
NVIDIA Technology at the Centre of the Project
NVIDIA’s accelerated-computing platforms will play a central role in the facility. L&T has already been working with NVIDIA on plans to establish gigawatt-scale AI factory infrastructure in India.
In February, L&T announced a proposed venture under the IndiaAI Mission to develop sovereign, scalable NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure. The company’s plans include expanding GPU capacity at its Chennai data centre and developing additional high-capacity facilities.
The broader strategy is aimed at providing computing capacity for Indian enterprises as well as global hyperscalers, cloud providers and AI companies.
Chennai Emerging as an AI Infrastructure Hub
The new project further strengthens Chennai’s position as an important data-centre and digital infrastructure location. Large-scale AI facilities require substantial power, cooling, networking and physical infrastructure, making established data-centre campuses particularly valuable for rapid deployment.
L&T’s existing Chennai campus is part of its broader plan to develop scalable AI infrastructure. The company has said its AI factory strategy is designed to support sectors including manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, energy and public services.
Boost for India’s AI Ambitions
The announcement comes as India seeks to expand its domestic AI capabilities and become a major global hub for AI development and deployment.
The availability of large-scale GPU infrastructure could help Indian businesses, researchers and developers gain access to advanced computing without relying entirely on overseas infrastructure. It could also support the country’s broader push toward sovereign AI infrastructure, where sensitive data and AI workloads can be processed within India.
The L&T-Together AI agreement therefore signals a broader shift in India’s technology industry—from its traditional strength in software and IT services toward AI chips, data centres, cloud computing and high-performance infrastructure.
With AI adoption accelerating globally, the Chennai facility could become an important part of India’s emerging AI ecosystem and further increase competition among companies investing in next-generation computing infrastructure.
