India is accelerating investments under the India Semiconductor Mission, attracting global chipmakers to establish semiconductor fabrication, packaging, and testing facilities, strengthening the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
New Delhi: India is stepping up its efforts to become a global semiconductor manufacturing hub by expanding investments under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The initiative aims to attract leading international chipmakers while strengthening the country’s domestic electronics manufacturing capabilities.
The government has intensified discussions with global semiconductor companies for setting up fabrication (fabs), assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP/OSAT) facilities across India. Industry experts believe these investments will reduce India’s dependence on imported semiconductor chips while boosting the country’s position in the global technology supply chain.
The India Semiconductor Mission offers financial incentives, infrastructure support, and policy assistance to encourage companies to establish manufacturing units in the country. The programme aligns with the government’s broader vision of “Make in India” and “Digital India,” which seek to enhance domestic manufacturing, create high-skilled employment, and strengthen technological self-reliance.
Several multinational companies have already announced semiconductor-related investments in India, while multiple projects are progressing in states such as Gujarat, Assam, and Karnataka. These facilities are expected to manufacture semiconductor components for consumer electronics, automobiles, telecommunications, industrial equipment, and artificial intelligence applications.
Experts say India’s growing electronics market, skilled engineering workforce, expanding digital economy, and supportive government policies make it an attractive destination for semiconductor manufacturing. The sector is also expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities over the next decade while encouraging innovation and research in advanced chip technologies.
The government’s continued focus on semiconductor production comes amid rising global demand for advanced chips driven by artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, cloud computing, 5G networks, and high-performance computing. By expanding domestic manufacturing capacity, India aims to improve supply chain resilience and position itself as a reliable global semiconductor partner.
Industry analysts believe sustained policy support, infrastructure development, and international collaboration will play a crucial role in helping India emerge as one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturing destinations in the coming years.
