India registered a commanding 170-run victory over Afghanistan in the second ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. With this win, Shubman Gill secured his first-ever ODI series triumph as captain.
India Posts Massive 402 Runs
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India delivered a batting masterclass, posting 402 runs in 49.5 overs. It was the eighth time India crossed the 400-run mark in ODI cricket, equaling South Africa’s record.
Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan Smash Brilliant Centuries
India suffered an early setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal departed cheaply. Captain Shubman Gill then stitched together an 87-run partnership with Rohit Sharma for the second wicket.
Rohit narrowly missed his half-century, getting out for 48 runs. Thereafter, Ishan Kishan joined Gill and the duo dominated the Afghan bowling attack.
The pair added a stunning 224-run partnership for the third wicket. Ishan Kishan played an explosive knock of 125 runs off 79 balls, hitting 14 fours and seven sixes.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill scored 154 runs and registered the ninth ODI century of his career.
India Loses Last Six Wickets for 42 Runs
India looked set to cross the 450-run mark at one stage, but a late collapse changed the momentum. After reaching 360/4, the team lost its final six wickets for just 42 runs.
This was also the first time in ODI history that a team was bowled out despite scoring more than 400 runs.
Shreyas Iyer contributed 26 runs, while Washington Sundar added 19 runs.
For Afghanistan, Nangeyalia Kharote picked up four wickets, while Rashid Khan claimed three.
Indian Bowlers Dominate Afghanistan
Chasing a daunting target of 403, Afghanistan never looked in contention as India’s pace trio kept them under constant pressure.
Rahmat Shah was Afghanistan’s top scorer with 79 runs off 89 balls, including eight boundaries. Sediqullah Atal scored 42, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributed 41 runs.
Gurbaz received an early lifeline due to a no-ball but failed to capitalize and was dismissed soon after.
Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 232 runs in 44.3 overs.
Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar took three wickets each, while Prince Yadav picked up two wickets. Washington Sundar also chipped in with one wicket.
First ODI Series Win Under Shubman Gill’s Captaincy
With this emphatic victory, India sealed the three-match ODI series 2-0 and handed Shubman Gill his maiden ODI series win as captain, marking another milestone in his leadership journey.
