Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the longest-serving men’s ODI cricketer, with a career spanning over 22 years.
Zimbabwe veteran Brendan Taylor has surpassed Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the longest-serving player in men’s One Day International history.
Taylor achieved the milestone when he took the field against Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series at Harare Sports Club on September 15, 2026.
The 40-year-old’s ODI career now spans approximately 22 years and four months, exceeding Tendulkar’s previous record of 22 years and three months. The record measures the period between a player’s first and most recent ODI appearances rather than uninterrupted playing time.
Taylor Sets New ODI Career-Span Record
Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe in 2004 and developed into one of the country’s most successful batters and wicketkeeper-batters.
Heading into the Australia series, he had played 207 ODIs and scored 11 centuries—the most by a Zimbabwean batter in the format. His longevity record is particularly remarkable because his international career included retirement and a lengthy suspension.
Taylor retired from international cricket in 2021. In 2022, he received a three-and-a-half-year ban for breaches of the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping Codes.
After completing the suspension, he reversed his retirement and returned to international cricket in 2025. His latest recall came as Zimbabwe continued preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which it will co-host with South Africa and Namibia.
According to Reuters, Taylor officially moved ahead of Tendulkar after being included in Zimbabwe’s playing XI for the first ODI against Australia.
Sachin Tendulkar Still Holds Major ODI Records
Although Taylor has overtaken Tendulkar for the longest ODI career span, the former India captain remains the format’s leading run-scorer and most-capped player.
Tendulkar accumulated 18,426 runs from 463 ODIs between 1989 and 2012. He also scored 49 ODI centuries and 96 half-centuries during his illustrious international career.
Taylor’s achievement therefore relates specifically to career longevity. Tendulkar continues to hold several of the most significant batting and appearance records in ODI cricket.
Zimbabwe Recall Taylor for Australia Series
Taylor returned to Zimbabwe’s ODI squad alongside veteran leg-spinner Graeme Cremer for the home series against Australia.
Zimbabwe named Sikandar Raza as captain after regular skipper Richard Ngarava was ruled out with a lower-back injury. Taylor was also expected to provide wicketkeeping support following an injury to Clive Madande.
The remaining matches of the three-game series are scheduled to be played at Harare Sports Club on September 18 and September 20.
Taylor’s record adds another important chapter to a career that has extended across different generations of Zimbabwean cricket. It also highlights his continued role in the national team as Zimbabwe prepares to host matches during the next ODI World Cup.
