Narendra Modi has completed 25 years as a head of government, spanning his tenure as Gujarat chief minister and India’s prime minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 25 years as a head of government on October 7, 2026, marking a political journey that began when he took oath as Gujarat chief minister in 2001 and later continued as India’s prime minister.
The milestone refers to Modi’s combined tenure leading the Gujarat and Union governments—not 25 years as prime minister. He became prime minister for the first time in May 2014 and began his third consecutive term on June 9, 2024.
Modi Offers Prayers at Delhi Temple
Modi marked the anniversary by visiting Shri Vinayak Mandir in Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar, where he offered prayers.
Reflecting on his years in government, the prime minister expressed gratitude to citizens and renewed his commitment to the goal of transforming India into a developed country by 2047.
In a message marking the beginning of his 25th year in October 2025, Modi had recalled assuming office in Gujarat during a difficult period following the devastating Bhuj earthquake, droughts, a cyclone and political instability. He said improving people’s lives had remained central to his work.
Union Cabinet Passes Special Resolution
The Union Cabinet adopted a resolution congratulating Modi on completing 25 years in government leadership.
The resolution highlighted initiatives launched during his tenure in Gujarat and programmes implemented nationally after 2014. It cited infrastructure investment, digital public services, financial inclusion, welfare delivery, national-security decisions and India’s growing diplomatic profile among his government’s achievements.
These assessments form part of the Cabinet’s official tribute. Modi’s record remains politically contested, with opposition parties continuing to challenge the government over employment, social tensions, institutional independence and its handling of dissent.
The Cabinet described the milestone as 25 years of continuous leadership as head of government, beginning on October 7, 2001.
World Leaders Congratulate PM Modi
Leaders from several countries, including Bhutan, Nigeria, the Philippines, Nepal, Botswana, Belgium and Japan, sent congratulatory messages.
The greetings praised Modi’s focus on development, technology, infrastructure and India’s expanding international role. Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu described the quarter-century milestone as a rare achievement in a democracy and highlighted the growing India–Nigeria strategic partnership.
The anniversary makes Modi one of India’s longest-serving heads of government when his years as chief minister and prime minister are considered together.
