Paris, France: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominant run at the 2026 French Open, defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets to secure a place in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, Sabalenka overcame Osaka 7-5, 6-3 during the women’s night session, marking her third victory over the Japanese star in 2026 and extending her impressive streak to 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances.
Sabalenka Overcomes Early Pressure
Osaka made a strong start to the match, winning the opening two games as Sabalenka struggled with unforced errors, including a costly double fault on break point.
However, the Belarusian quickly regained control, breaking back immediately and dominating on serve for the remainder of the contest. Sabalenka did not face another break point after the opening stages and consistently applied pressure with her powerful baseline game.
The top seed finished with 12 aces and won 83 percent of points on her first serve, delivering one of her strongest serving performances of the tournament.
Aggressive Tennis and Tactical Variety Prove Decisive
While both players produced an entertaining display of attacking tennis, Sabalenka’s versatility proved to be the difference.
The three-time Grand Slam champion struck 39 winners, nearly double Osaka’s tally, while also incorporating drop shots and net approaches effectively. Sabalenka won 10 of her 11 points at the net and used drop shots to disrupt Osaka’s rhythm throughout the match.
Speaking after the match, Osaka acknowledged Sabalenka’s tactical variety and ability to mix power with finesse.
Focused on Ending Roland Garros Heartbreak
Sabalenka has yet to drop a set during the tournament and remains one of the strongest contenders for the French Open title.
After narrowly missing out on the championship last year, the World No. 1 said she is fully focused on her own performances rather than the upsets and surprises that have dominated this year’s tournament.
“I’m focused on myself and bringing my best level every time I step on the court,” Sabalenka said, emphasizing her determination to capture her first Roland Garros title.
Quarterfinal Clash Against Diana Shnaider
Sabalenka will next face No. 25 seed Diana Shnaider, who reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal after defeating Madison Keys in a hard-fought three-set battle.
With several top contenders already eliminated, Sabalenka now enters the final stages of the tournament as one of the favorites to lift the French Open trophy.
The victory further strengthens her bid for a maiden Roland Garros title and another Grand Slam crown in what has already been a remarkable 2026 season.
