India’s Rishikanta Singh won a silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, setting a new Games record in the snatch with a remarkable 121kg lift.
Glasgow, Scotland: India opened its weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a memorable performance as Chanambam Rishikanta Singh clinched the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category. The Indian lifter also etched his name into the record books by setting a new Commonwealth Games snatch record.
Rishikanta finished with a combined lift of 264kg, comprising 121kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean and jerk, securing India’s first silver medal and second overall medal at the Glasgow Games after para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze.
Record-Breaking Snatch Performance
The Indian weightlifter impressed from the start, successfully lifting 116kg and 119kg before producing a stunning 121kg lift in his final snatch attempt. The effort established a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch while also becoming Rishikanta’s personal best.
Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan matched the 121kg lift, leaving both athletes tied after the opening discipline.
Gold Slips Away in Clean and Jerk
Rishikanta began the clean and jerk with a successful 143kg lift, temporarily taking the overall lead with a total of 264kg.
However, Kasdan responded with lifts of 145kg, 149kg, and finally 152kg, finishing with a Games record total of 273kg to secure the gold medal.
Needing 151kg on his final attempt to reclaim the lead, Rishikanta managed the clean but was unable to complete the jerk, ending his challenge for the top podium finish.
