Kabul/Islamabad: Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have sharply escalated after Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government claimed responsibility for launching strikes on targets along the Pakistan border. The latest exchange follows Pakistan’s recent cross-border military operation, raising fears of renewed conflict between the neighboring countries.
According to the Taliban administration, its forces targeted positions along the border in response to Pakistan’s airstrikes carried out earlier this week. Afghan officials alleged that the Pakistani operation struck civilian homes, killing at least 36 people and injuring more than 160 others, describing the attack as an “atrocity” and a violation of Afghan sovereignty.
Pakistan, however, rejected the allegations and maintained that its military operation was aimed solely at militant hideouts in Afghanistan’s Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces. Islamabad said the offensive was launched after a series of terrorist attacks inside Pakistan and claimed that 29 militants were killed during the operation.
Following the Taliban’s retaliatory strikes, authorities in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province reported injuries and damage near the border. Pakistan’s military also stated that it intercepted and shot down four rudimentary drones, warning that any further aggression would receive a “befitting response.”
