Tokyo: Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for all newly released PlayStation titles starting January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in the gaming industry’s move toward a fully digital future.
According to the company, games launching from January 2028 onward will be distributed exclusively through digital downloads via the PlayStation Store. However, physical copies of games released before the deadline will continue to be sold while stocks last, and players will still be able to use compatible discs they already own.
Sony said the transition reflects the growing popularity of digital game purchases, faster internet connectivity, cloud gaming advancements, and changing consumer preferences. The company noted that a majority of PlayStation users now purchase games digitally, making digital distribution the primary focus for future releases.
The decision is expected to streamline game publishing, reduce manufacturing and shipping costs, and lower the environmental impact associated with producing plastic disc cases and physical media. Sony also plans to enhance digital ownership features, preloading capabilities, cloud saves, and PlayStation Store services to support the transition.
While the announcement signals the end of an era for collectors and physical media enthusiasts, Sony emphasized that players will continue to have access to their existing disc-based game libraries on compatible PlayStation consoles. Accessories, collector’s editions, and other merchandise will also continue to be available.
The move follows a broader industry trend as digital game sales continue to outpace physical copies across major gaming platforms, with publishers increasingly prioritizing downloadable content and online distribution.
