C-17 Globemaster Flies From Latvia to Moscow
Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft was a Boeing C-17 Globemaster, carrying the US-registered tail number 07-7181. It flew directly from Riga, Latvia, to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, landing at around 0700 GMT.
The aircraft had previously arrived in Riga on August 23 from the Camp Springs/Joint Base Andrews area near Washington, D.C., according to flight-tracking data.
The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft used to move troops, equipment and cargo. However, there is currently no verified information about who or what was aboard this particular flight. Reuters said it could not establish whether the aircraft was carrying passengers or cargo.
Kremlin Says It Has ‘No Information’
The unusual arrival attracted particular attention after the Kremlin said it had no information about the plane. That statement does not necessarily mean Russian aviation or security authorities were unaware of the flight; it indicates that the Kremlin had provided no explanation for its purpose when questioned.
Neither side had publicly disclosed a confirmed diplomatic mission connected to the aircraft at the time of the initial reports.
Rare US Flight Comes Amid Diplomatic Uncertainty
The flight is notable because direct US aircraft movements from Europe into Russia have become extremely unusual.
Reuters reported that the previous direct flight by a US-registered jet from Europe to Russia occurred in January 2026, when US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the war in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said last week that it had no information about another planned Moscow visit by Witkoff and Kushner. Meanwhile, US-Russia negotiations over Ukraine have largely stalled amid the broader geopolitical turmoil surrounding the war in Iran.
The unexplained C-17 landing has therefore generated considerable speculation about whether another diplomatic engagement could be underway. There is currently no verified evidence establishing such a connection, however, and the purpose of the flight remains undisclosed.
Until Washington or Moscow provides further details, the safest conclusion is that a US military transport aircraft made a rare flight into Moscow, but its mission, cargo and passengers remain unknown.
