India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded to 12 countries, strengthening its global presence and boosting cross-border digital payments, tourism, and fintech innovation.
New Delhi: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continues to expand its global footprint, with 12 countries now adopting or integrating the digital payment platform, marking a significant milestone in India’s fintech and digital payments revolution.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has transformed digital transactions by enabling instant, secure, and real-time money transfers. Its growing international adoption reflects increasing global confidence in India’s digital payment infrastructure.
Countries that have either integrated or enabled UPI-based payment services include France, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Maldives, and Trinidad & Tobago, allowing Indian travellers and businesses to make seamless digital payments abroad.
The expansion is expected to boost cross-border transactions, simplify remittances, and enhance convenience for Indian tourists, students, professionals, and businesses operating overseas.
The government has been actively promoting UPI as part of its Digital India initiative, with several international partnerships aimed at connecting payment systems across borders. Financial experts believe the wider adoption of UPI will strengthen India’s position as a global leader in digital public infrastructure and fintech innovation.
With UPI processing billions of transactions every month, its international growth is also expected to support trade, tourism, and financial inclusion while showcasing India’s homegrown payment technology on the global stage.
