Phu Quoc, Vietnam: A tragic boat accident near Vietnam’s popular Phu Quoc Island has claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists, with 14 of the victims identified as Lava International channel partners and one as a company team member. The accident has sent shockwaves across India, particularly within the mobile handset industry.
The speedboat, carrying 32 Indian tourists along with four crew members, reportedly capsized near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island after encountering rough sea conditions and high waves during a sightseeing trip. Rescue teams managed to save 21 people, while all 15 victims were later recovered.
Lava International expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, confirming that the deceased included 14 of its channel partners and one employee. The company said it is extending full support to the bereaved families during this difficult time.
According to the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, the victims include 10 people from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala. Embassy officials have set up emergency assistance centres and are coordinating with Vietnamese authorities to help survivors and facilitate support for the families of those who lost their lives.
Vietnamese Prime Minister has ordered a detailed investigation into the accident and directed authorities to review maritime safety measures for tourist boats operating around Phu Quoc Island. Preliminary reports suggest that strong winds and rough waves may have caused the vessel to overturn, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
The incident is one of the deadliest accidents involving Indian tourists overseas in recent years and has prompted condolences from leaders and renewed calls for stricter safety protocols during water tourism activities.
