New Delhi: In a major counter-terrorism operation, Delhi Police’s Special Cell has busted an alleged Pakistan-backed terror-crime network linked to Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and arrested seven suspected operatives. Authorities said the group was planning terrorist activities in the Delhi-NCR region while also running an arms and narcotics smuggling racket.
According to investigators, the network was allegedly operated by Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terrorist Shahzad Bhatti and his associate Ajmal Gujjar. The accused were reportedly tasked with carrying out reconnaissance of crowded public places, sensitive installations, and locations associated with religious leaders across Delhi-NCR. Photos and videos of these sites were allegedly shared with handlers in Pakistan.
Police said the syndicate smuggled weapons, ammunition, and narcotics from Pakistan into India through Punjab, with drone-based deliveries reportedly being used for transportation. The illegal consignments were then distributed across Delhi-NCR through local operatives.
During the operation, authorities recovered five semi-automatic pistols, 41 live cartridges, multiple mobile phones containing chats and voice messages linked to Pakistan-based handlers, a vehicle, and details of bank accounts allegedly used for financial transactions related to arms and drug trafficking.
Investigators believe the module was attempting to recruit Indian youths through social media and encrypted messaging platforms by offering money and promising quick financial gains. Recruits were allegedly drawn into activities ranging from arms supply and drug smuggling to surveillance and terror-related operations.
Officials stated that the timely arrests may have prevented a major terror attack in the national capital region. Further investigations are underway to identify additional members, suppliers, and Pakistan-based handlers connected to the network.
