Tehran: Iran’s football federation has claimed that its allocation of supporter tickets for the upcoming FIFA World Cup group-stage matches has been revoked just days before the tournament begins, raising fresh concerns over the country’s participation in the competition.
The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) stated that FIFA regulations entitle each participating nation to receive a portion of match tickets for distribution among supporters. According to the federation, ticket sales had already begun before the allocation was reportedly withdrawn, leaving many Iranian fans uncertain despite having made travel arrangements.
In a strongly worded statement, the FFIRI criticized the decision, arguing that denying Iranian supporters access to their official ticket allocation goes against the principles of fairness and equality in international sporting events.
The federation also questioned whether political considerations were influencing tournament organization and called on FIFA to uphold neutrality and established regulations governing the World Cup.
Growing Challenges Ahead of the Tournament
Iran’s preparations for the World Cup have faced several obstacles amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and security concerns in the Middle East.
Earlier, the Iranian national team shifted its training base from Arizona in the United States to Tijuana, Mexico, citing difficulties related to hosting arrangements. Under current visa conditions, the team is expected to travel into the United States only for matchdays before returning to Mexico.
The federation has also previously expressed concerns over visa issues involving members of the team’s administrative and support staff, claiming that several officials were denied entry permits.
Group Stage Fixtures Confirmed
Iran is scheduled to begin its World Cup campaign against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles, followed by a clash with Belgium on June 21 at the same venue. The team will then face Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The latest dispute over fan tickets adds another layer of uncertainty to Iran’s World Cup participation, with supporters awaiting further clarification from FIFA regarding ticket distribution and travel arrangements.
As the tournament approaches, attention remains focused on whether the governing body will respond to the federation’s concerns and address the issues surrounding Iranian fans and officials.
