Dropping kilograms on the scale may feel like the clearest sign of progress, but weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing. Growing research suggests that preserving muscle while reducing excess body fat may be a better goal for improving body composition, strength and long-term health.
The distinction has become particularly important as calorie-restricted diets and GLP-1-based obesity treatments help people achieve substantial weight loss. Researchers are increasingly emphasizing resistance exercise as a way to protect lean tissue during that process.
Weight Loss Isn’t Always Just Fat Loss
Your total body weight includes fat, muscle, bone, organs, water and other tissues. When someone loses 10 kg, the entire 10 kg does not necessarily come from body fat.
Dietary calorie restriction can reduce fat effectively, but some fat-free mass is typically lost as well.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials found that adding resistance exercise to dietary weight loss did not significantly change total body-weight loss compared with diet alone. However, it increased fat loss, reduced the loss of fat-free mass and improved muscular strength.
That means two people could lose a similar number of kilograms while experiencing very different changes in body composition.
Why Resistance Training Changes the Equation
Resistance training—including weightlifting, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises—gives muscles a reason to remain active and strong during an energy deficit.
A separate network meta-analysis involving 62 randomized trials and 4,429 participants found that combining exercise with calorie restriction generally produced better body-composition outcomes than calorie restriction alone. Resistance and mixed exercise approaches were particularly useful for preserving lean body mass.
This is why the smallest possible number on the scale isn’t necessarily the best fitness outcome.
Someone who loses substantial fat while preserving muscle may weigh slightly more than someone who loses both—but could have a more favorable body composition.
GLP-1 Weight Loss Makes Muscle Preservation More Relevant
The issue has taken on new importance with the growing use of medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.
Significant weight reduction with GLP-1-based treatments can include losses of both fat and lean tissue. In June 2026, research presented at ENDO 2026 also found that adults with obesity in the study reduced their physical activity after beginning GLP-1 treatment, prompting researchers to emphasize exercise during medical weight management.
This doesn’t mean GLP-1 medications inherently produce unhealthy weight loss. Rather, it highlights why maintaining physical activity and muscle strength remains important while body weight is falling.
Cardio Still Has an Important Role
Strength training shouldn’t replace aerobic exercise entirely.
Activities such as walking, cycling, swimming and running improve cardiovascular fitness and can contribute to calorie expenditure and fat reduction.
Evidence suggests that combining aerobic and resistance exercise during weight loss can provide a particularly useful mix: cardio supports cardiovascular fitness, while resistance training helps preserve muscle and strength.
Measure Progress Beyond Kilograms
For people intentionally losing weight, the scale remains useful for tracking overall trends. But it shouldn’t necessarily be the only measure of success.
Depending on the individual, useful indicators can include waist circumference, strength, cardiovascular fitness, physical function and professionally assessed body composition.
The difference is important: weight loss tells you how much lighter you became; body composition helps tell you what you actually lost.
The emerging fitness message is therefore less about chasing the lowest possible weight and more about achieving higher-quality weight loss—reducing excess fat while preserving muscle, strength and physical function.
