A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Longchang City in Sichuan Province at 1:13 p.m. Beijing time on Friday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The epicentre was located at 29.23°N, 105.22°E, at a depth of about 13 km.
The USGS measurement is slightly lower, at about magnitude 5.0 and 10 km depth. This type of difference between seismic agencies is normal because they use different datasets and calculation methods.
As of the latest reports I found, there are no confirmed deaths, injuries or major damage from the Sichuan earthquake. Authorities are still assessing the affected area, so those figures could change.
China’s official earthquake database also recorded a separate magnitude 3.8 earthquake in Liunan District of Liuzhou, Guangxi, at 12:31 a.m. today.
