A major leadership shake-up appears to be unfolding at Mumbai Indians after IPL 2026, with sources indicating that Hardik Pandya is set to lose the captaincy and could even leave the franchise altogether.
Following a disappointing season in which Mumbai Indians managed only four wins in 14 matches, the franchise management is reportedly reconsidering its leadership strategy after replacing Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2024 season.
According to sources close to the development, Rohit Sharma will now play a crucial role in selecting Mumbai Indians’ next captain.
Rohit Sharma to Have Major Say in Next MI Captain Appointment
Sources told NDTV that Mumbai Indians want to avoid repeating the backlash and dressing-room tensions that followed Rohit Sharma’s removal as captain.
As a result, the franchise is expected to consult Rohit before finalising its next leadership appointment.
“The next Mumbai Indians captain will be the one who has the blessings of Rohit Sharma. Mumbai realise the mistake they have made. But it will not be Rohit himself,” a source close to the development reportedly said.
While Rohit Sharma is unlikely to return as captain, he remains the most influential figure within the Mumbai Indians setup.
Hardik Pandya’s Relationship With MI Management Reportedly Worsened
Sources also claim that Hardik Pandya is considering seeking a transfer away from Mumbai Indians due to a breakdown in relations with the franchise management.
The all-rounder’s difficult stint as captain has reportedly affected his standing within the team environment.
“Hardik will seek a transfer. It is not just about captaincy but about personal realities as well. Can you work for a company when you don’t have a good relation with the management?” the source added.
Hardik Pandya was traded from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians before IPL 2024 in one of the league’s biggest transfer moves.
Mumbai Indians’ Captaincy Decision Under Spotlight
The decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya had sparked massive controversy among Mumbai Indians fans and cricket experts.
Rohit had led the franchise to five IPL titles and was regarded as one of the most successful captains in IPL history.
However, Mumbai Indians struggled to deliver consistent performances under Hardik’s leadership over the past three seasons, culminating in a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign.
Ashish Nehra Rumours Also Addressed
The report also mentioned speculation around Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra potentially joining Mumbai Indians during Hardik Pandya’s transfer.
However, sources suggested that poaching top coaches or captains from rival IPL franchises is far more difficult than it appears.
“No franchise can poach coach and captain from another franchise. Why would Ashish Nehra come?” the source reportedly said.
Official Update Expected Soon
While Mumbai Indians have not yet issued an official statement, a final decision regarding Hardik Pandya’s future and the team’s next captain is expected within the coming weeks.
The development could trigger one of the biggest leadership changes ahead of IPL 2027.
