New Delhi: The Central government has sought an explanation from WhatsApp over its proposed username feature, amid concerns about user privacy and online safety. The development comes as the messaging platform clarified that the feature is still under development and is designed to enhance, not compromise, user privacy.
According to government sources, authorities have issued a notice to WhatsApp seeking details about how the username system will function, what data it will collect, and the safeguards in place to prevent misuse. The government is also examining whether the feature complies with India’s digital privacy and cybersecurity framework.
Responding to concerns, WhatsApp said the username feature will be optional, meaning users will not be required to create a username and can continue using the platform with their phone numbers if they choose.
The company also clarified that usernames will be protected and not publicly searchable. Unlike social media platforms where usernames can be searched and discovered by anyone, WhatsApp said its system will not allow users to browse or locate accounts simply by searching for a username. The aim is to reduce spam, impersonation, and unwanted contact while giving users an additional privacy option.
WhatsApp explained that the feature is intended to let users communicate without necessarily sharing their mobile numbers in certain situations, providing an extra layer of privacy for conversations.
The messaging platform stressed that the feature has not yet been rolled out and remains under development. It said further details will be shared closer to the official launch.
The government’s notice highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny of digital platforms as new communication features are introduced. Officials are expected to review WhatsApp’s response before deciding whether additional safeguards or compliance measures are necessary.
The development comes at a time when concerns over online privacy, data protection, and cyber safety continue to shape India’s approach to regulating digital services.
