Small Indian manufacturers face poor data quality, legacy equipment, skill shortages and integration costs as they attempt to scale artificial intelligence.
India’s small and medium-sized manufacturers are showing growing interest in artificial intelligence, but weak data infrastructure, outdated machinery and limited technical expertise are preventing many businesses from moving beyond experimental projects.
AI tools can help manufacturers predict equipment failures, automate quality inspections, reduce energy consumption and improve supply-chain planning. However, these applications depend on reliable operational data and connected production systems—resources that many smaller factories do not yet possess.
Poor Data Limits AI Expansion
A major difficulty is converting information generated by factory equipment, spreadsheets, paper records and disconnected software into consistent, usable datasets.
Rockwell Automation’s 2026 State of Smart Manufacturing study found that manufacturers worldwide are collecting increasing amounts of information but effectively using only 43% of it. In India, industry analysis based on the report indicated that about 60% of manufacturers struggle to capture, interpret and use their operational data effectively.
Without accurate and accessible information, AI systems may deliver unreliable forecasts or remain confined to small pilot projects.
Legacy Equipment Creates Integration Problems
Many small factories continue to operate machinery that was not designed to share real-time information with cloud platforms or modern analytics tools. Connecting these machines can require new sensors, software and cybersecurity controls, increasing both costs and complexity.
Smaller manufacturers also face shortages of AI-trained workers and often depend heavily on outside technology vendors. PwC India identifies internal readiness gaps and fragmented external support as major obstacles to sustainable AI adoption among manufacturing MSMEs.
The report estimates that AI could contribute between $135.6 billion and $149.9 billion to MSME value creation by 2035, provided businesses receive adequate access to technology, skills and implementation support.
Government Promotes AI Adoption
The Indian government is supporting digital adoption through the ₹10,371.92-crore IndiaAI Mission, which includes computing capacity, datasets, skills development, startup financing and safe-AI initiatives. The programme is intended to expand access to AI across sectors, including MSMEs.
For small manufacturers, experts recommend beginning with limited, measurable applications such as visual quality checks, predictive maintenance or inventory forecasting. Building clean data systems and connecting essential equipment before attempting large-scale automation can reduce risk and improve returns.
