Kathmandu, September 1, 2026: Nepal Police has reported the recovery of 1,058 human remains, while 4,606 people remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic Bhote Koshi flood, according to its latest update issued at 2:00 p.m. Nepal time.
Authorities clarified that the recovery figure includes bodies as well as partial human remains. It should therefore not automatically be interpreted as 1,058 individually confirmed deaths. The published police report also contains an internal numerical discrepancy that requires further official clarification.
NDRRMA Reports 1,003 Bodies Recovered
An earlier National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority update, issued at 1:00 p.m., recorded 1,003 recovered bodies, 3,916 missing people and 11,884 rescues in Nepal.
Among those listed as missing were:
- 639 hydropower workers
- 583 foreign nationals
- 164 Nepalis travelling with foreign groups
- Members of the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, customs and immigration departments
The difference between the NDRRMA and Nepal Police totals likely reflects different reporting methods, verification stages and the inclusion of partial remains. Authorities are expected to reconcile the figures as identification work progresses.
Tibet Reports 16 Dead and 546 Missing
Chinese authorities’ latest publicly available figures remain at 16 confirmed deaths and 546 missing people in Tibet.
Using the earlier verified NDRRMA figures, the combined Nepal–Tibet toll stands at 1,019 confirmed deaths and 4,462 missing. Nepal Police’s newer recovered-remains count has not been included in this combined calculation because partial remains may not represent separate individuals.
Hydropower Tunnel Searches Continue
Hydropower facilities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot remain the main focus of search operations. Joint teams from Nepal, India and China are using excavators, rock-breaking equipment, temporary bridges and helicopters to reach blocked tunnels and isolated project sites.
Authorities say 279 hydropower workers have been rescued, but 639 are still missing. Rescuers are draining water from tunnel entrances and removing thick layers of mud, rocks and debris. Unstable terrain and damaged machinery continue to slow the operation.
315 Foreign Tourists Rescued
The Nepal Tourism Board has confirmed that 315 foreign tourists have been rescued, including 187 Indian and 108 Chinese nationals. Four tourists each from Malta and Germany were also rescued, along with travellers from several other countries.
However, 583 foreign nationals remain out of contact, and authorities are coordinating with diplomatic missions and relatives to verify their identities and locations.
Fresh Flash-Flood Warning Issued
Although water levels in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers are currently below official warning thresholds, forecasters say sudden local surges remain possible.
Rasuwa and Nuwakot face a high risk of severe flash flooding, while several other districts—including Kathmandu, Dhading, Sindhupalchok, Gorkha and Dolakha—are under moderate-risk warnings.
Residents near rivers, unstable slopes and low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow evacuation instructions.
