NEW DELHI: Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s action-spy thriller Alpha has made its OTT debut today, giving audiences a chance to watch the female-led chapter of the YRF Spy Universe at home after its theatrical run. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
‘Alpha’ OTT Release: When and Where to Watch
Netflix officially announced the digital premiere on August 27, confirming that Alpha would arrive on the platform on August 28, coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan weekend. The film originally opened in cinemas on July 3, 2026.
The streaming release comes nearly two months after its theatrical debut and could introduce the movie to a significantly wider audience after its relatively modest cinema performance.
Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Lead the Spy Thriller
Directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, Alpha is billed as the seventh instalment of the YRF Spy Universe and its first female-led film.
Alia Bhatt plays Sita, while Sharvari stars as Durga. The story revolves around Sita’s transformation into a highly trained operative and her confrontation with the forces responsible for her traumatic past.
The supporting cast includes Bobby Deol as Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat and Anil Kapoor in a senior intelligence role. Dia Mirza also appears, while Hrithik Roshan makes a special appearance as his War character Kabir.
First Female-Led Film in YRF Spy Universe
Alpha represents an important change for YRF’s long-running spy franchise by placing two women at the centre of its action narrative.
The franchise began with Ek Tha Tiger and subsequently expanded through Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3 and War 2. Alpha follows as the seventh film.
Its storyline combines espionage, revenge, family secrets and a programme designed to produce highly capable operatives, with a special serum playing a significant role in the plot.
‘Alpha’ Had a Modest Theatrical Run
Despite its high-profile cast and connection with the YRF Spy Universe, Alpha did not deliver the kind of theatrical numbers associated with some of the franchise’s biggest releases.
Current box-office reports vary slightly. Mint cites a worldwide collection of around ₹99.10 crore, while Cinema Express reports approximately ₹98.6 crore worldwide based on box-office tracker figures.
The film also received a mixed critical response. India Today’s theatrical review awarded it 2.5/5, praising Alia Bhatt’s action performance while criticising aspects of its screenplay and melodrama.
Can OTT Give ‘Alpha’ a Second Life?
The Netflix premiere provides Alpha with an opportunity to find viewers who skipped its theatrical run. Its arrival also comes during a busy streaming weekend, with several major films and series releasing across OTT platforms on August 28.
With Alia Bhatt and Sharvari leading the action, Bobby Deol playing the principal antagonist and links to established YRF Spy Universe characters, the movie has several elements that could generate renewed interest in the digital space.
For fans of the franchise, the OTT release also makes Alpha more accessible ahead of whatever direction YRF takes its interconnected spy universe next.
