New Delhi: Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming India’s technology landscape, putting the country’s $315 billion IT services industry under pressure while simultaneously creating new opportunities in AI applications, data centres, automation and digital infrastructure. The latest developments show that India’s traditional outsourcing model is entering a major transition as global clients increasingly demand greater productivity, faster delivery and lower costs.
For decades, India’s IT services sector has relied heavily on large workforces to deliver software development, maintenance, consulting and business-process services to international customers. However, the rapid adoption of generative AI and AI agents is changing that model. Companies are increasingly able to automate tasks that previously required large teams of entry-level programmers and other technology workers.
According to a recent Reuters report, major Indian IT companies including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Cognizant are moving towards performance- and outcome-based contracts as customers seek more value from technology spending. Instead of paying primarily for the number of employees or hours involved in a project, clients are increasingly interested in measurable business results.
AI Puts Pressure on Traditional IT Outsourcing
The change is creating intense competition across India’s IT services industry. While large technology companies continue to invest heavily in artificial intelligence, smaller and mid-sized firms are also gaining ground by offering faster AI pilots, flexible contracts and specialised solutions.
Reuters reported that Persistent Systems and Coforge have recently recorded stronger revenue growth than several larger IT companies, highlighting how AI is changing competitive dynamics in the sector. At the same time, pricing pressure is increasing because automation allows businesses to complete certain projects with fewer human resources. (Reuters)
The impact is also being felt in hiring. Automation is reducing demand for some traditional entry-level coding roles, while demand is growing for workers with expertise in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data engineering, cybersecurity and advanced software development. Earlier Reuters reporting showed that AI-related hiring in India’s IT sector was growing faster than overall IT recruitment, reflecting the shift in the skills required by employers.
Companies Increasingly Build AI Capabilities In-House
Another major development is the growing tendency among global companies to bring technology work inside their own organisations. As AI improves productivity, multinational companies are expanding their India-based capability centres and taking on more technology work internally instead of outsourcing everything to traditional IT service providers.
This could create a significant structural change for India. While the country is expected to remain a major technology and engineering hub, IT companies may increasingly compete on AI expertise, intellectual property, specialised platforms and business outcomes rather than simply workforce scale.
Vaishnaw Highlights India’s AI Advantage
Amid these changes, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has highlighted a different opportunity for India. According to comments reported on August 21, Vaishnaw said India’s strength in artificial intelligence lies particularly in the applications layer, where AI can be developed and deployed for practical business, government and consumer use cases.
Vaishnaw also pointed to data centres as another area where India has significant potential. The country’s expanding renewable-energy capacity could provide an important advantage because AI data centres require enormous amounts of electricity to operate increasingly powerful computing infrastructure. The government has been attempting to strengthen the broader AI ecosystem through initiatives covering computing capacity, datasets, applications, future skills, innovation and safe and trusted AI. India’s data-centre capacity is also expanding as cloud computing and AI adoption accelerate. Government data indicates that current cloud data-centre capacity is around 1,280 MW, with capacity expected to increase substantially by 2030.
India Targets a Bigger Role in Global AI Race
India is also seeking large-scale investment in AI infrastructure. Earlier this year, the government outlined ambitions to attract as much as $200 billion in data-centre investment as the country attempts to establish itself as a major global AI hub.
The country’s opportunity could therefore extend beyond traditional IT outsourcing. AI applications, cloud infrastructure, data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, AI-focused startups and specialised technology services could become increasingly important contributors to India’s digital economy.
The transformation will nevertheless bring challenges. IT companies must balance AI-driven productivity gains against pressure on revenues, margins and employment. Workers will also need to upgrade their skills as demand shifts away from repetitive coding and routine technology tasks towards AI engineering, data science, cloud infrastructure and higher-value consulting.
For India, the emerging AI economy presents both a disruption and an opportunity. The traditional IT services model is being forced to evolve, but the country’s large technology workforce, expanding digital infrastructure, growing startup ecosystem and renewable-energy capacity could help it remain a major player in the global technology industry.
