Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin extended warm greetings to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on India’s 80th Independence Day, praising the country’s progress across economic, social, scientific and technological fields.
In a message shared by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Putin said India has made “remarkable progress” and has earned significant authority on the international stage. He also highlighted the continued development of India-Russia relations, describing the partnership as particularly privileged and strategic.
Putin Highlights India-Russia Strategic Partnership
Putin said Moscow and New Delhi are cooperating across a wide range of sectors while maintaining close coordination through international organisations, including the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS.
He expressed confidence that both countries would continue working together to strengthen their partnership and contribute to international security and stability.
The Russian President’s message comes at a time when India and Russia are exploring new areas of cooperation, including connectivity, logistics, energy, trade and Arctic maritime routes.
Northern Sea Route Gains Importance
A key area under discussion is the Northern Sea Route (NSR), an Arctic maritime corridor that Russia is developing as a potential trade link between Europe and Asia.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on August 14 that discussions with Russia on connectivity, including the Northern Sea Route, are ongoing. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said connectivity remains an important component of India’s multifaceted engagement with Russia.
For India, greater engagement with the NSR could complement existing connectivity initiatives such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor.
India and Russia have previously identified cooperation in the Russian Far East and Arctic as an important area for expanding trade and investment. Official bilateral documents have also noted progress in cooperation related to the Northern Sea Route.
Focus on Trade and Connectivity
The Arctic route could eventually provide additional options for transporting goods and energy between Asian and European markets. For India, participation in Arctic connectivity could support broader efforts to diversify trade routes and strengthen maritime cooperation.
Putin’s Independence Day message therefore carries significance beyond the ceremonial greetings. It comes amid continued efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to expand their longstanding relationship into newer areas of technology, energy, logistics, maritime connectivity and international cooperation.
India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on August 15, with Prime Minister Modi addressing the nation from the Red Fort. Putin’s message added another high-level diplomatic acknowledgement of India’s growing role in global affairs.
