Ireland’s hopes of direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup ended after the first ODI against Afghanistan was washed out. The team will now compete in the ICC World Cup Qualifier.
Bready, United Kingdom: Ireland’s hopes of securing direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup were officially dashed after the opening One-Day International against Afghanistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain in Bready.
The washout ended Ireland’s slim mathematical chance of finishing among the top-ranked teams before the September 30, 2026 qualification cut-off. Ranked 12th in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings, Ireland needed a highly unlikely 5-0 series whitewash over Afghanistan, while also relying on the West Indies to lose both remaining ODIs against India, to climb above Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies in the rankings and earn automatic qualification.
With the abandoned match making that scenario impossible, Ireland must now take the longer qualification route through the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Under the revised qualification pathway, the winner of the World Cup Qualifier will secure a direct berth in the 12-team 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The teams finishing second, third, and fourth in the Qualifier will advance to the World Cup Super Series, where they will compete for the final available place in the tournament.
The Qualifier will feature the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations (excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe), the top four teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and four teams progressing through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
Ireland will be determined to avoid repeating the disappointment of the 2023 ODI World Cup qualification campaign, when they were eliminated in the Super Six stage and failed to qualify for the tournament in India. The remaining matches against Afghanistan will now be crucial for maintaining momentum ahead of the challenging qualification process.
